But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. – Mt. 6:33
…they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. – Acts 17:11
This is a unique type of search engine for finding sound religious material by simultaneously searching many different sites. This site was created as a follow on the first version of SeekYe1st.net. The main difference is the usage of Google’s custom search as opposed to a sphider search. The sphider search has many advantages however it also has several drawbacks. The most significant of those issues is the necessity to maintain the manually created index. There are several of the websites which were in the index which were being updated more rapidly than the index could be re-created.
The main reason for not using Google’s index in the first version was to remain independent of Google for reasons too lengthy to disclose here. While I still have those concerns, I feel they are outweighed by the advantages of using what is already available without having to spend the time to maintain the index.
Which Sites Are Included?
I have chosen not to publish the list of websites being used in each search at this point because that list does change periodically. All the sites included are authored by members of non-instutional churches. You will get an idea from viewing your search results about the sites being used in each of the searches.
Each of these search engines is optimized over what I feel are some of the best websites for finding that type of material. Some websites will appear in multiple searches.
If for instance you are looking for articles related to the disciple John Mark. A Google search using only those two words will leave you with 89,300,000 results. If you enclose those two words in quotation marks (restricting the results to occurrences of the words side-by-side) your results will be reduced to about 4,920,000 results. The search from my homepage (using only websites by our brethren). will leave you with about 2,890 results If you enclose those two words in quotation marks you have narrowed your results to 163. I would much rather look through 163 references written by our brethren than the 89 million written by whomever.
I have not set out to create the largest links collection. My goal is to provide the highest quality of links in each category. I am trying to provide not just a link but information about each website so that you do not waste a lot of time on a website that is not what you’re looking for. In an effort to combat dead links, I do run a plug-in for WordPress that periodically checks for dead links and I try to keep on top of them by removing those that are not working. If a website owner has changed, thus changing the content I have no way of catching those. If you find one that’s not working, please let me know.
This is something new I am trying. My theory behind this is to provide a list of articles on a particular subject. Obviously you can do a search and receive a list of articles on your subject. If the list is very long though, it may not be that helpful due to the amount of time required to look at each article. Hopefully this will offer you a pre-filtered list on your subject to allow you to more quickly narrow down the core of what you’re looking for.
Echoes from the Past
In December of 2011 I was asked to submit links to articles from the archives of Truth Magazine which can be used in electronic newsletter to be sent out weekly. Along with the link a short summary of the content of the article is also provided. They are reposted here as an additional resource.
